Career Enhancement Tips From The Obermeyer Group
ELEVEN INTERVIEWING DOs
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL RESUME
- Use a chronological resume. List your employment from the most recent to the least recent. Show the month and year for beginning dates and ending dates.
- When listing the companies you have worked for under work history, briefly state what that company makes and the processes used unless it is obvious. If they are a consulting or insurance firm, state the type of clients served.
- Dot point statements or paragraphs are acceptable when describing your duties and accomplishments.
- Blend accomplishments into duties/functions. For example: "Developed a behavior based safety program that assisted in reducing the incident rate from 5.5 to 2.1."
- Using professional "lingo" when describing what you did is appropriate. For example: "lockout/tagout, confined space, air monitoring, Title V permitting, process safety management, etc."
- Keep your "objective" general. If you put management in the objective statement, expect to be screened out for many positions.
- If your degree is in your field or related to it (i.e. science or engineering) put the education information above work history. If it is not closely related put it right after work history.
- A clear font (no script) is highly preferred. Use 11 point or 12 point size print.
- One page resumes are not a rule. For candidates with 2 or more years of experience, a 2 to 3 page resume is acceptable. Brief is better but not at the expense of presenting yourself fairly and completely.
- Do not put your age, religion, health status, marital status, or race on your resume.
- Use acronyms for any certifications next to your name at the top of the resume. For example: "P.E., C.I.H." Further detail them near the end of the resume.
- Do not put long lists of seminars and courses you have attended.
- Be truthful, but be sure to state your successes.
- Remember, as a general rule, the ideal candidate on paper is someone who has done the same job in the same or similar industry and shows career progression. You cannot always be that ideal person but you can show yourself from the best possible perspective.
